August 21, 2003
Jeff Michner of Sand Barrens Golf Club shot a 74 at Running Deer Golf Club Tuesday to capture the South Jersey Golf Association's Amateur Tournament. Bill Milner of Running Deer was second on a match of cards with a 75. Joe Russo of Wedgwood was third with a 75. Walt Wolfe of Wildwood Country Club was fourth with a 77 and Tom Hyland of Little Mill was fifth with a 78.

Travis Toyama of Kaneohe, Ha., broke a tournament record previously shared by Tiger Woods as he won the boys' title by 10 strokes last Friday at the 35th annual Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic (IIAJC) played at Olde York Country Club in Columbus.

In the girls' division, Sukjin Lee Wuesthoff of Toms River overcame a five-stroke deficit in the final nine holes to win by two shots over Liebelei Lawrence of Bradenton, Fla. Wuesthoff shot a 303 for four rounds and Lawrence a 305. Earlier in the year, Wuesthoff won the U.S. Girls' Junior championship.

Chris Gallagher of Penn Oaks Golf Club won one of the Golf Association of Philadelphia's majors when he won the Patterson Cup, the stroke play championship, last Thursday with a two-round total of 6-under par.

Gallagher shot a 2-under-par 69 at Bellewood Golf Club in the morning and a 4-under-par 68 at the Spring-Ford Country Club in the afternoon.

Rich Pruchnik of West Chester G&CC and Glenn Smeraglio of Yardley CC tied for second place at 1- under-par 142.

Two Tavistock Country Club players … Michael Tash (74-72) and Jamie Slonis (69-77) … tied for seventh at 146. Woodbury Country Club's Joe April tied for 11th at 148.

For the second consecutive year, Tash placed second in GAP's Silver Cross standings. He finished his four rounds with a 289 total. The Silver Cross is awarded to the player with the lowest aggregate score in the Joseph H. Patterson Memorial Cup and the qualifying rounds of the Amateur Championship. Michael McDermott of Llanerch Country Club won the Silver Cross with a 2-under-par 282.

The Burlington Country Club team of Mark Mack, Chip Smith III, Tom St. John, Joe Sosaa and Mark Witczak shot a 12-under 58 to win the gross division of the Philadelphia Section PGA's Buick Scramble at the Burlington Country Club last Thursday. They beat the Medford Village team of Frank Hesson, Don and Ann Nelson and Larry and Debra Ammons. The Medford Village team won the net division in a chip-off. Both teams will be going to the National Buick Scramble finals Oct.‚8-12 in Orlando, Fla.

Section Championship Pro-Am: Dick Smith Jr. of Woodcrest Country Club tied for fourth Sunday with a 1-under-par 71 at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. George Frake of Little Mill and John Appleget of Blue Heron Pines tied for 10th at 1-over 73.

Junior Tour: Soo Shin of Moorestown shot a 79 to win the Girls' 13-18 division. Sarena Patel of Cherry Hill shot an 86 to place third. Nicholas Orlando of Cape May Court House finished second on a match of cards with a 76 and Frank Cossio of Brigantine was third with a 76 in the boys' 16-18 division. Gordon Biddle of Moorestown had a 76 for second place and Adam Carlson of Mays Landing had an 80 for third in the boys' 14-15 division. Heather Petronis of Erma shot a 42 for third in the boys' 10-11, girls' 10-12 combined division.

Mike Potopa of Little Mill Country Club shot a 71 to win the individual gross honors at the 16th annual Ann Ferren Golf Classic at the Tavistock Country Club. Doug Cusick of Tavistock was second with a 74 and Bob Maneely of Merchantville Country Club was third with a 75. Cusick had a hole in one on the 16th. Joan Manos of Merchantville CC won the women's individual honors with a 97.

The Wildwood Golf and Country Club five-man team of David Smolsky, Tom Carusa, Joe Kane, Mike Longshore and Steve Owens won the low gross of the Philadelphia Section PGA tournament at Woodcrest Country Club on Monday. They shot a 16-under 55 to win by five shots and earn $120 per man in the A.M. session.

The net winners in the A.M. were the host team of Jamie Shaffer, Brian Friedman, Drew Markoe, Wendy Martinez and Steve Shapiro at 15-under 56. They also won $120 per man. They earned first place in a chip-off over the Pitman Golf Course team of Orist Wells, Dan Bealin, Glenn Kennelly, Jim Raley and Matt Sheehan. They earned $60 per man.

The Sea Oaks team of Jeff Bonicky, Bill Burke, Ed Naughton, Tom Stellmach and Mike Sullivan won the afternoon net in a chip-off over the Tavistock team of Rick Hughart, Mike Camardo, Ron Cusick, Vern Norcross and Horace Williams. Both teams were 17 under. Sea Oaks earned $108 per man, Tavistock $80 per man.

In the afternoon gross, the Deerwood team of Greg Farrow, Preston Betham, Eric Degrave, Brian Dix and Harry Renwick finished fourth at 10 under and earned $40 per man.

GAP: The Tavistock Country Club duo of Michael Tash and Jamie Slonis lost in a three-way playoff in the 31st Four-Ball Stroke Play Championship at Burlington Country Club on Aug. 7. The Lancaster Country Club team of Ken Phillips and Shawn Baker won the playoff.

George Farley of Wildwood Golf Club shot a net 67 for second place in the B Class at the Fall Net Championship held Aug. 6 at Deerfield Golf and Tennis Club in Newark, Del. Bill Kaufmann of Woodbury Country Club tied for fourth in the A Class with a net 69 and Joe Spuhler of Wildwood Golf Club tied for fourth in C Class with a net 70.

In qualifying for the U.S. Senior Amateur held Monday at Galloway National Golf Club, the following five made the cut: Richard Smith (73), Vic Gerard (73), Andrew Tompos (74), Jim Haynie (74) and David Brookerson (75).

Junior Tour: Chris Gold of Haddonfield finished second with a 72 and Kevin Kaveman of Willingboro was third with a 73 in the boys' 16-18 division of the Tournament of Champions held Monday at Center Square Golf Club in Center Square, Pa. B.J. Berzanskis of Egg Harbor Township shot a 43 over nine holes to place third in the boys' 10-11 and girls' 10-12 combined division.

On Aug. 6 at Penn State's Blue Course, Kyle Raudenbush of Pine Valley finished second with a 47 in the boys' 10-11, girls' 10-12 combined division. Matt Raudenbush of Pine Valley finished third in boys' 14-15 with an 82.

In the Aug. 5 event at Three Little Bakers and State College Elks courses, South Jersey took six thirds. William Handy of Laurel Spring had a 75 in the boys' 16-18 division. Dan Rexon of Haddonfield had a 66 in the boys' 14-15, Sadiyya Gillespie of Sickerville had a 47 over a rain-short ened 11 holes in boys' 12-13 and was also third in the boys' 10-11 and girls' 10-12 division. At the Elks, Brian Selders of Sewell had a 75 in the boys' 16-18 and Kyle Raudenbush of Pine Valley had a 50 in the boys' 10-11 and girls' 10-12 division.

In the Rutgers Junior Girls Open on Aug. 9 at the university's course, Joanna Co of Mays Landing shot an 81 for second in 14-and-under division. Katie Conway won with a 77.

George Frake of Little Mill Country Club placed third with a 68 at the Philadelphia Section PGA Shawnee Open at the par 72 Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort at Marshall Creek, Pa. on Monday.

Mark Parisi of Christiana Country Club won the event on the first playoff hole after tying with Bob Hibschman of Manufacturers Golf & Country Club with 67s.

Ken Peyre-Ferry of The Links and Greg Farrow of Deerwood Country Club tied for fifth with 71s in the senior division.

Joe April of Woodbury Country Club fired a 68 to finish second in qualifying for the Golf Association of Philadelphia's Patterson Cup at Christiana Country Club on July 24.

Other South Jersey qualifiers include: Thomas DiCinti of Little Mill tied for sixth with a 73, Christopher Cochran of Riverton Country Club tied for 20th with a 75, Thomas Hyland of Little Mill and Craig Starn of Greate Bay Golf Club tied for 23rd with 76s, Mark Kosko of Seaview and Michael Vannelli of Medford Village Country Club tied for 32nd with 77s, and Norman Charlesworth of Running Deer Golf Club, Andrew Dietz of Laurel Creek Country Club and Rick Wright of Running Deer were in a group that qualified in a playoff.

Chris Gold of Haddonfield shot a 69 at the par 71 Centerton Golf Club on July 24 to win the boys' 16-18 year-old division of the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop. Stephen Sieracki of Cherry Hill was second with a 72 and Eric Mintz of Linwood was third with a 73.

In the boys' 14-15 division, Matthew Newton of Pittsgrove won with a 71. Michael Meisenzahl of Medford was second with a 77 and Matt Kaelin of Medford was third with a 79.

In the boys' 12-13 year-old divison, Frank Berzanskis of Egg Harbor Township shot an 82 to win. William Hoese of Cherry Hill finished second with an 83.

B.J. Berzankis of Egg Harbor Township and Heather Petronis of Erma finished one-two with 46s in the boys' 10-11 and girls' 10-12 division. Petronis also shot a 46 over nine holes to take second in the girls' 10-12-year-old division at tour stop at Chesapeake Golf Club in Rising Sun, Md., on July 23.

Soo Shin of Moorestown shot a 93 to finish third in the girls' 13-18 division at the tour stop at the par 70 Philmont Country Club. Monday, Shin shot an 80 to finish second to Cherry Hill's Seema Patel, who shot a 73, in the girls' 13-18 division of the tour stop at Linfield National Golf Club in Linfield, Pa.

Senoon Shin of Moorestown shot an 87 to place second in the boys' 12-13 division at the Linfield stop.

Ken Peyre-Ferry of The Links shot a two-round 142 total to finish tied for second in the Philadelphia Section PGA Pro Stroke Play event July 18 at Brandywine Country Club in Tallyville, Del. Pete Oakley of The Rookery won it at 134.

Andy Fisher of Woodcrest Country Club tied for 10th with a two-round total of 149 at the Golf Association of Philadelphia's 99th Open Championship held at Huntingdon Valley Country Club on July 16. Brian Kelly of Bucknell Golf Club won the event at 143.

The Woodbury Country Club/Running Deer Golf Club team of Raymond Spadaro, Arthur Polink, Bill Kaufmann and Rick Christ shot a two-round total of 148 to place sixth in the low gross category at the Golf Association of Philadelphia's 14th annual Senior Four-Man Team Championship at Plymouth Country Club on July 17.

Soo Shin of Moorestown shot an 85 to place second in the girls' 13-18 division at the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop at Wyncote Golf Club on July 17. Shin also won the girls' 15-19 division with an 88 at the Tour stop July 15 at Running Deer Golf Club.

Chris Gold of Haddonfield shot a 72 to win the boys' 16-18 division of the Junior Tour at Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club on July 16. Matt Zeiders of Sewell was second with an 81. In the boys' 14-15 division, Phil Anzaldo and Dan Rexon, both of Haddonfield, shot 78s to finish second and third, respectively.

Matt Raudenbush of Pine Valley Golf Club shot a 38 for third place in a three-way scorecard playoff in the Junior-Junior boys' division (14-and-under) at the Golf Association of Philadelphia's 19th annual Jock MacKenzie Memorial Tournament at Sandy Run Country Club on Monday. Gold shot a 76 to tie for sixth in the Junior boys' division.

Chris Sylvia of Pine Valley Golf Club shot a 1-over-par 71 to win the Class B division at the Golf Association of Philadelphia's 57th annual Caddie Tournament held Monday at Edgemont Country Club in Edgemont, Pa.

Sylvia has caddied at Pine Valley for one year and this was his first year in the tournament.

Sylvia had two bogeys on the front nine and one birdie on the back. He hit 15 of 18 greens in regulation.

"I hit it solid", Sylvia said, "but had five or six birdies that just went short. I played very well, but just couldn't putt."

Barry Dear and Joe April finished second in the Philadelphia Section PGA Pro-Junior Championship Tuesday at Northampton Country Club. They shot a 70, one stroke back of winners Gary Hardin and Chris Hardin.

The Links' Dave Quinn tied for fourth with a 70 at the Philadelphia Section PGA TaylorMade/Adidas tournament at the Woodcrest Country Club. Greg Farrow of Deerwood tied for second with a 71 in the senior division.

Greg Farrow of Deerwood Country Club shot a 131 (66-65) over two days to win the Burlington Classic by four shots over Mark Sheftic of Sunnybrook Golf Club on Monday at the par-70 Burlington Country Club. Ken Peyre-Ferry (The Links) tied for third with Paul Oglesby (Merion) at 138.

The Moorestown Field Club/Little Mill Country Club team of Eric Schmehl and Matt Kaelin shot a 71 to place third in the Junior Division (ages 15-17) of the 19th annual Francis X. Hussey Memorial Tournament at Rolling Green Golf Club on Monday.

The Laurel Creek foursome of Cory Taylor, Joe Landers, Jamie Wallace and Dennis Furey carded a 238 to place fifth in the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) Junior Team Championship held June 23 at Bala Golf Club in Philadelphia. Wallace was low man for Laurel Creek with a 76. Taylor shot 77 and Landers and Furey shot 85s. White Manor won the event with a 232 total.

Stephen Sieracki of Merchantville Country Club shot a 73 in qualifying for the GAP Junior Boys' Championship. He is seeded seventh in the Championship Flight. Jamie Wallace of Moorestown Field Club is seeded first in the First Flight. Laurel Creek's Cory Taylor is seeded fifth, Moorestown Field Club's Michael Harrigan is seeded sixth and Tavistock's Daniel Rexon is seeded 12th.

South Jersey swept the top three spots in the boys' 16-18 division at the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour on June 23 at the 6,083-yard, par-71 Cape May National layout. Steven Ranson of Cape May won it with a 70, Chris Gold of Haddonfield was second with a 72 and Michael O'Keefe of Medford shot a 76.

Michael Meisenzhal of Medford shot an 81 to finish third in the boys' 14-15 division. William Hoese of Cherry Hill shot a 73 to finish second in the boys' 12-13 division. Kyle Raudenbush of Pine Valley shot a 49 to finish third in the 9-hole boys' 10-11 and girls' 10-12 division.

South Jersey took the top three spots in the boys' 16-18 division of the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour on June 24 at the 5,896-yard, par-71 Avalon Golf Club.

Michael O'Keefe of Medford won it with an even-par 71. Steve Ransom of Cape May shot a 72 and Zach Mullock of Cape May Point shot a 73. In the boys' 14-15 division, Michael Meisenzahl was second with a 74 and Alex Wolf of Turnersville was third with a 76. In the boys' 10-11 and girls' 10-12 combined nine-hole division, Kyle Raudenbush of Pine Valley shot a 47 to win it and Heather Petronis of Erma was second with a 49.

In the girls' 13-18 division, Seema Patel of Cherry Hill won with an 86.

Dave Taraschi of Haddonfield shot a 75 to finish third in the boys' 14-15 division of the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour held June 25 at the 5,115-yard, par-66 Horsham Valley Country Club.

Darren Raudenbush of Pine Valley shot a 48 to finish third in the combined nine-hole boys' and girls' 8-9 division at the Pines of Clermont.

Tavistock won the GAP Team Championship at Huntsville Golf Club on June 26 with 30“ points (20 in singles, 10“ in foursomes). The Tavistock team was Mike Tash, Tom Gramigna, Ron Cusick, Jamie Slonis, Bill McGuinness, Sean Leonard, Bob Arthur and Ryan Jordan.

The foursome of Mike Egan, Jim Hocker, Chris Rymer and John Egan shot an 8-under 64 to win the Phillies Hosts and Hostesses 4th annual golf outing at Beckett Golf Club. The tournament raised $350 to help fight ALS.

Greg Farrow of Deerwood Country Club shot a 6-under-par 64 to win the 2nd annual Conestoga Classic by three shots over Pete Oakley (The Rookery) Monday at Conestoga Country Club in Lancaster Pa.

Burlington Country Club's Vince Ramagli tied for fourth at 69.

Michael Tash of Tavistock Country Club, the 2002 player of the year and Patterson Cup winner, leads eight exempt amateur players for the Philadelphia Open Championship at Huntingdon Valley Country Club on July 16.

The other seven exemptions will join the 45 professionals from the Philadelphia Section of the PGA in the field of 60. The exemptions are: Chris Lange of Overbrook GC, the low amateur in the 2002 Open;Michael McDermott of Llanerch CC, a two-time player of the year;Oscar Mestre, Jr., the 2002 Middle-Amateur champion;Rob Savarese, Jr., of Philadelphia Cricket Club, the 2003 Middle-Amateur champion and Billy Stewart of Llanerch CC, the 2002 Amateur champion are all exempt into the field. Also the 2003 Amateur champion will recieve an exemption into the Open Championship. Open qualifiers from Tuesday were: Clint Deibert of Doylestown CC (140); Anthony Apostolico of Deerfield G&TC (140); James White of Philadelphia Cricket Club (142);P. Chet Wlash of Philadelphia CC (143); Brian Gillespie of St. Davids GC (144);James Kieserman of Saucon Valley CC (145) and John Robinson of Commonwealth National GC (146);

John Spina won the two-day Variety Club Tournament of Champions at the Whitemarsh Valley Country Club with a 7-under-par 137. He earned $6,500 for his win. He beat Jim Masserio (Aronmink) and Bill Sautter (Talamore at Oak Terrace). Greg Farrow of Deerwood finished four shots back. Other South Jersey pros in the top 10 were Dick Smith of Woodcrest and Dave Quinn of Centerton.

Rob Savarese Jr. of the Philadelphia Cricket Club won the Golf Association of Philadelphia's Middle Amateur Championship at his home course May 29.

Savarese shot a two-day total of 2 under 140 for a two-shot victory over Bill McGuinness of Tavistock Country-Club. Michael Tash of Tavistock finished two more shots back at 144. Four more shots back was another Tavistock member, Thomas Gramigna.

The Philadelphia Section PGA held its Pro-Men's Team Championship May 29th at the par 71 Coatsville (PA.) Country Club and the Radnor Valley Country Club team of George Foster, Howard Domers, Murray Gorson, and Jerry Markowitz tied the Radley Run Country Club team of Dick Hendrickson, Al Gagliardi, Charles Jordan and Ron Pedrick with a 9-under 62 in the net division. In the gross division, the Radnor Valley team tied the Rock Manor Golf Club team of Jim Mattias, Ed Grove, Chris Leslie and Tom Quinn at 3-uner 68 in the one best ball of four format.

Hidden Valley Golf Club member William Smith won the Pennsylvania Golf Association's George Dessler Pennsylvania State Public Links Championship at the Dauphin Highlands Golf Course on May 27.

Smith shot a 4-under 68 to win by three strokes. John Engleman of Mt Laurel shot an 80.

The Tavistock Country Club team of Jamie Slonis, Sean Leonard, Robert Arthur and Thomas Gramigna shot a 294 to finish 2nd in the Golf Association of Philadelphia Team Championship qualifying tournament at the St. Davids Golf Club on May 27. Spring-Ford (Royersford, PA) led the way with a four-man total of 289.

The team of John Appleget (Blue Heron Pines) and Pete Oakley (The Heron Pines) shot an 8-under-par 64 to claim the Philadelphia Section PGA's Spring Pro-Pro Championship held May 19 at Hartefeld National Golf Club in Avondale, PA. The team of Ken Peyre-Ferry (The Links) and Mike Thompson (Irish Oaks DR) finished tied for 10th at 4 under. Joining them were the Laurel Creek duo of John DiMarco and John Tyrell, and the team of Dave Quinn (Centerton GC) and Vince Ramagli (Burlington CC).

Dave Quinn of The Links captured one of three available spots in the Nationwide Northeast Classic Sectional Qualifier Tuesday at Glenmaura National Golf Club. He was one of four pros tied at 1-over 72. The other two spots went to Chris Bartolacci of Jericho National and Dave Roberts of Cedarbrook. Barry Dear of the South Jersey Golf Center lost a playoff for one of the spots and will be the first alternate. The tournament starts June 12 at the Moosic, PA. course.

The Links Golf Club foursome of Jay McGill, Mike LoBosco, Wayne Downs and Keith Weisenauer won the Medford-Vincentown Rotary Golf Tournament at Medford Lakes Country Club for the second straight year May 19th.
