White Oaks stands tall

Only in its third season, the White Oaks Country Club has established itself as one of the premier places to play in South Jersey.

Designed by Steve Filippone with additions and features by then-golf course builders/designers Ted Ellsworth and Mike Gaffney for Arret and Emory Dobson, this parkland-style 155- acre layout was cut out of 238 acres of pine and oak trees at 2951 Dutch Mill Road.

White Oaks plays 6,532 from the blue tees to a par 71. It's 6,081 from the white tees to a per 71, 5,603 yards from the gold tees to a par 71 and 5,195 from the red tees to a par 71.

The fairways are bent grass, 40-to-50 yards wide, with most pine- and oak-tree lined. The greens, also bent grass, are on the large size. The smallest green is the 5,500-square foot par 3, 168-yard (white tees) 12th hole. The largest is the 12,000-square foot par 3, 214-yard (white tees) 17th hole. In all, the average size is about 8,000 square feet.

White Oaks may appear short yardage-wise, but it is challenging. Spraying to left and/or right can post big numbers on the scoreboard. Most par 4s are playable to the green with a fairway-placed tee shot and a short iron.

The toughest hole is the No. 1 handicap par 5, 562-yard ( white tees) 7th hole. The hole plays to a tight fairway with a tree and waste bunkers to the right of the tee-shot landing area. The fairway then opens to a 90-degree bend into the green.

Another featured hole is the par 4, 365-yard (white tees) 9th hole. This hole features an upper and lower green (pin changed daily). Water crosses the shorter lower green, with the same water coming into play to the right of the longer upper green.

The par 4, 327-yard (white tee) 15th hole plays to an almost island green with a waste bunker wrapping around the green from the upper right to the upper left.

Then, there's the 17th, which was one of the Courier-Post featured dream holes. The 220-yard par 3 plays to a 12,000 square foot, 70-foot long green, with a fairway waste bunker to the left. A shot hit to the right can roll onto the green. However, it's still a putting challenge to make par. The oversized green offers a lot of movement.

There are three par 5s - holes 3, 7, and 10 - play to 475, 562, and 540 yards, all from the white tees.

Despite a rather dry season, greens superintendent Tom Currie has kept White Oaks in very green condition.

``We have some high spots and some low spots,'' director of golf Frank Griser said, ``and this seems to hold whatever water there is pretty good. Tom has done a good job of keeping the course as green as it is.''

Another attractive part of the White Oaks package is the greens fees. From Monday through Wednesday it's $39.99 with cart. Thursday and Friday it's $49.99 with cart. Saturday and Sunday it's $59.99 with cart. There's also a senior special at $25 anytime Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday through Friday it's $25 from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 11:03 a. m. to 1:30 p.m.. There's also twilight rates at $29.99, starting everyday at 2 p.m. Junior specials are also available.
