TOURNAMENT TALES
Kellie Adamucci (gross) and Jan MacAvoy (net) took top honors in the Buena Vista Women's Golf Association Flight A Championship at the Buena Vista Country Club Aug. 13, 15 and 20. Eleanor Leek (gross) and Carol Kane (net) took Flight B honors. Marion Abrehamsen (gross) and Nancy Mukai (net) won Flight C titles.
The Medford Lakes Country Club team of Dan Haskell, Robert Roth, Kevin Ross, Dan Ross and Jim Raley won a trip to Disney World to participate in the Buick Scramble National Finals at Lake Buena Vista, Fla., Oct. 2-6. The team posted a 16-under par 28-27-55 during the Philadelphia Section Buick Scramble Tournament at Woodcrest Country Club on Aug. 12. The Laurel Creek Country Club team of John DiMarco, Manny Fernandes, Harold Wright, Joe Macine and Mike Frost also advanced to the nationals with a 15-under par 27-29-56. The Laurel Creek team edged the Tavistock Country Club team of Rich Hughart, Mike Bolger, Fred Guarnieri, Ron Cusick and Al Lindenburgh (15-under 27-29-56) with a 10-foot, 12-inch chip off (best three of five chips total).
The Merchantville Country Club team of Jack Wilkerson and Ron Sweigart carded a best-ball gross 66 and defeated Mike Potopa of Little Mill Country Club and Bob Williams of Tavistock Country Club on a match of cards to win the 15th annual Ann Ferren Golf Classic at Tavistock Country Club on Aug. 12. The team Jack Lyons (unattached) and Pete Ranieri (unattached) took net honors with a 52. The Merchantville team of Bill Hanna and John Strazullo posted a 54 and edged the Magee Rehabilitation team of Mike Saulino and Ron Siggs on a match of cards for second place. The team of Betty Hellard and Linda Samson took the Women's Gross Division with a 78. Low net honors went to the team of Sue George and Cheryl Middleton. Second place went to the Merchantville Country Club team of Nancy Jerome and Joan Manos. Mike Potopa carded a 68 and edged Tom Gramigna on a match of cards for low net honors.
Cheryl Middleton's 82 took the women's low gross individual honors.
Andrew Dietz 2 up on a 36-hole match to win the Medford Village Country Club's Championship Flight on Aug. 11. Don Nelson defeated Scott Portner 1 up on the 19th hole to win the 1st Flight. Jim Beaney defeated Tony Russo 3 and 2 to take the 1st Flight. Rich Forte defeated Paul DiFillippo 1 up to win the 3rd Flight. Vince Santore defeated Frank Valenti 4 and 3 to win the 4th Flight.
The Tavistock Country Club team of Pete Klaus defeated Al Pfafman 2 and 0 to win Wedgwood Country Club's President's Cup at Wedgwood Country Club Aug. 10-11. Lance Oberparleiter carded a 227 to win the Championship Flight. Kurt Oberparleiter posted a 237 for second place. Bill Small and George Harms shared third place with 244s. Bill Bickford posted a 156 to win the A Flight. Tim Ahern was second with a 159. Paul Franks was third with a 160. John Watts (163) defeated Ernie Williams in a playoff to take the B Flight title. Mark Gould posted a 165 for third. John Chando took the C Flight with a 169. Steve Consalvo and Jack Tussey shared second with 170. Pat Nowakowski took the C Flight with a 192. Jack Roache was second with a 195. Jim Lizon and Ken Bell shared third place with 196s.
Robert Arthur and Ron Cusick registered two eagles and four birdies and carded a 7-under-par 64 to win the Golf Association of Philadelphia Four-Ball Stroke Play Championship at the the par 71 Bellewood Golf Club (North Coventry, Pa.) on Aug. 8.
Eighteen-year-old Jonathan Vannelli defeated defending champion Brett O'Brien carded a 24 for five holes (par-3 course) to win the 10-and-under championship of the Wheat Road Golf Junior Golf Camp Tournament on Aug. 9. Dominic Romano was second with a 25, followed by Ricky Fiocchi and Gregory McLaughlin with 28s. Jonah Smith took the 11-and-older crown (11 holes) with a 42. Alec Ricciuti was second with a 46 followed by Matthew Leister with a 50. Tyler Rae of Hockessin, De., carded a 68 and defeated Kevin Kaufman of Willingboro on a match of cards for top honors in the Boys' 16-18 division during the Philadelphia Section PGA 2002 Junior Tour at the Bucks County Country Club on Aug. 5. Michael Willams of Newark, De., carded a 71 for top honors in the Boys' 16-18 division during the Philadelphia Section PGA 2002 Junior Tour and the Town and Country Golf Links on Aug. 1. Bob Hennefer of Cherry Hill was second with a 75. Joshua Bariliar of Shamong was third with a 76. Carlie Worden of Sewell posted an 88 to win the Girls' 13-18 division. Soo Shin of Moorestown placed third with a 94. Keith Bader of Marlton carded a 71 for top honors in the Boys' 14-15 division. William Handy of Laurel Springs was second with a 73. Jack Meehan of Moorestown posted a 71 for top honors in the Boys' 12-13 division. Adam Carlson of Mays Landing was second with a 72. Mike Meehan of Moorestown scored a 41 (9 holes) and edged Sehoon Sin of Moorestown on a match of cards to win the Boys' 10-11 and Girls' 10-12 combined division. Michael Vergari scored a 43 for third place.

Greg Whiting of Philadelphia used a 7-iron on the par 3, 138-yard 4th hole at Wedgwood Country Club on Aug. 1.
Marv Bennett of Cherry Hill used a 4-iron on the par 3, 166-yard 16th hole at Wedgwood Country Club on June 28.
Twelve-year-old Jake Falls used a 7-iron on the par 3, 106-yard 18th hole at Maple Ridge Golf Club on July 16.
Joe Shapley used a 5-iron on the par 3, 178-yard 18th hole at Maple Ridge Golf Club on June 28.
