OF NOTE
A new team tournament, the New Jersey Challenge, will be held at the Plainfield Country Club on Sept. 23. There will be two levels of competition. There will be A-flight team competition with USGA indexes of 10 or lower. It will be 18-hole medal play, gross score, two best balls of four.
The second level will be B-flight team competition with USGA indexes of 18 or lower. It will be 18-hole medal play, net score, two best balls of four. Men and women will play from respective championship tee locations. Details: (908) 647-0800, ext. 700.
TOURNAMENT TALES
Andrew Schlesinger carded an 89 for a third-place finish in the boys' 12-13 division during the Philadelphia Section PGA 2002 Junior Tour at the Juniata Golf Club (Philadelphia) on Tuesday.
Matthew Martin of Philadelphia took top honors with a 76. Stephen Sieracki of Cherry Hill posted a 78 and was edged on a match of cards by Cole Wilcox for top honors in the boys' 14-15 division.
Michael O'Keefe of Medford scored a 75 for a second-place finish in the boys' 14-15 division during the Philadelphia Section PGA 2002 Junior Tour at the Middletown Country Club (Langhorne, Pa.) on Tuesday. Nick Benevento of Langhorne, Pa., took top honors with a 73.
Senoon Shin of Moorestown placed second with a 44 (9 holes) in the boys' 10-11 and girls' 10-12 combined division during the Philadelphia Section PGA 2002 Junior Tour at the Linfield National Golf Club on Sunday.
The team of Philmont Country Club PGA professional John Shapcott, Susquehanna Valley Country PGA professional Andy Fisher, Eric Aloi, George Kilmer and Mike Pancost carded a 24-under 57-59-116 for top honors during the Philadelphia Section PGA Burlington Pro-Am at the Burlington Country Club on Sunday and Monday.
Burlington Country Club PGA professional Mike Mack teamed with Philadelphia PGA professional Gary Deetscreek, George Reinhar, Steve Hruby and Tom Neroda for a 21-under par 56-63-119 and edged the team (21-under 57-62-119) of Laurel Creek Country Club PGA professional John DiMarco, Medford Lakes Country Club professional Dan Haskell, John Destefano, Rex McWilliams and Bob Price for second place.
HOLES-IN-ONE
Dan Gallagher of Erial used a pitching wedge on the par-3, 113-yard 4th hole at the Scotland Run Golf Club on July 24.
Paul Bustard of Egg Harbor used a 6-iron on the par-3, 158-yard 7th hole at the Blue Heron Pines East Course on June 20.
