You've played golf for years in South Jersey. You have your idea of the best hole.
So do we. Let's compare.
The Courier-Post will release our Dream Course … the best 18 holes on public courses in South Jersey … in a two-page layout on Sunday, Aug.‚18. And you are invited to participate.
With more than 40 public and semi-private courses in the seven counties that make up South Jersey, it has been no easy task compiling the 18 best golf holes in the area.
Here's the three criteria we use to define "best": playability, challenge and aesthetics.
Playability: Is it fair to the average golfer? Can the 15-to-25 handicapper make par? And does that golfer have a chance at an occasional birdie?
Challenge: Is there one to the hole? A 200-yard straight par 4 with no hazards won't make the cut.
Aesthetics: Does a hole look good without being too gimmicky? More to the point, does the look of the hole make sense?
Applying this criteria led our 18 best holes in South Jersey. Not the 18 hardest, 18 most scenic, 18 most fair or 18 most challenging.
You may disagree.
In an effort to be fair, the Courier-Post is sponsoring a contest for our readers. Submit by letter, fax or e-mail what you believe to be the best hole in South Jersey in 25 words or less.
We will review all the responses and pick the 18 best for a Readers' Great 18. That will appear Thursday, Aug.‚15, on the Courier-Post Golf Page.
Here's the best part: Two responses chosen at random by Courier-Post editors will win a chance to play the Courier-Post Dream Course with two newspaper employees.
It will happen in one day on Monday, Aug.‚19, and will feature limousine service, food and beverages, in addition to playing the 18 best holes in South Jersey.
Winners must agree to play on Aug.‚19 and allow their names and photos to be used in a story that will recap the day.
