New Shore Gate Golf Club features links-style layout in a park setting
By PAUL GIORDANO
The latest South Jersey seashore venue to open its facilities as a daily-fee golf course is the Shore Gate Golf Club in Ocean View.
The 18-hole course, a half-mile off Exit 17 of the Garden State Parkway, has been carved out of 245 acres of pristine forest just a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean.
Owned by Scott and John Turner and designed by Golfplan-Fream and Dale Golf Course Architects of California, Shore Gate is a blend of Scottish links-style layout and parkland, featuring sand, water and trees.
There are seven ponds and lakes, bringing water into play on seven holes. Shore Gate features five sets of tees and plays 5,284 to 7,227 yards.
The toughest hole is the par-5, 577-yard (white tees) 9th hole, where water comes into play on the left side of the fairway and in front of the green. The best chance for a birdie is on the par-3, 112-yard (white tees) 14th hole.
All tees, fairways and greens are bent grass. The rough is a blend of blue and fescue grass. The practice facility features a driving range with four levels of grass tees, a putting green and a bunker-to-green setup. The clubhouse consists of a pro shop and snack bar.
Besides being open as a daily-fee course, Shore Gate also is offering a limited number of memberships.
